Mia Vallens is a shapeshifter who works as a grief counselor.

History[]

Mia was born to a female shapeshifter and an unknown human lover. Growing up, Mia's mother kept her away from other shapeshifters and appeared to instill a more human set of values within Mia than most shapeshifters possess.

Mia eventually meets another shapeshifter named Buddy when she was "young and stupid" and began a relationship with him. However, Buddy was sadistic and violent and enjoyed hurting people. After witnessing Buddy murder several people and suffering abuse at his hands, Mia flees the relationship and takes on a new name and face, becoming Mia Vallens.

As Mia Vallens, Mia becomes a grief counselor. Wanting to make up for the things that she and Buddy had done, Mia begins helping her patients by shifting into the forms of their deceased loved ones so that the people have a chance to say goodbye and to finally get closure.

Unknown to Mia, Buddy eventually tracks her down and poses as her patient John Driscoll. Buddy manages to access Mia's patient records while he is in her home/office and targets and kills her patients Wes Bailey and Gloria Simon. At the time of Wes's murder, Mia is volunteering at a local women's shelter.

Wes's murder draws the attention of hunters Sam and Dean Winchester who suspect that they are dealing with a vengeful spirit. After finding no trace of ghosts and the murder of Gloria, the Winchesters learn that both Wes and Gloria were seeing Mia and suspect that she is actually a medium that has been summoning ghosts who have been growing angry afterwards.

To find out more about Mia and her practices, the Winchesters and Jack visit her as brothers seeking grief counseling over the death of their mother. While Dean initially seeks information on Mia's practices, she refuses to answer and the session quickly dissolves into an argument between the Winchesters over Sam's inability to accept that their mother is dead while Dean refuses to accept that she is still alive. The argument eventually leads to Sam storming out of the room.

After Sam departs, Mia points out that Dean's behavior led to Sam leaving and that Jack is clearly terrified of him. Mia tries to get Dean to see how his behavior is hurting those around him, before Sam reenters the room, armed. Sam reveals that he has found Mia's recently shed skin and he now knows that she is a shapeshifter. Dean explains to Jack that Mia is a monster that is killing her patients. Realizing they are hunters, Mia admits to being a shapeshifter though she insists that she has never hurt anyone and explains how she uses her powers to give her patients a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones. Mia is shocked to hear that Wes and Gloria were killed by something that looked like their dead wife and son respectively and asks the Winchesters to check her alibi of being at the women's shelter at the time of Wes' murder.

Dean is able to confirm Mia's alibi, to Sam's surprise and her relief. Mia quickly realizes that her old lover and fellow shape-shifter Buddy is the culprit and informs the Winchesters of Buddy's sadistic demeanor and her history with him. However, Mia is unsure of who Buddy could be impersonating to get close to her but suggests that it's Tom, her assistant. While Dean and Jack go to check on Tom, Sam accesses Mia's security camera footage to search for anyone with a retinal flare that identifies them as a shapeshifter. Sam gets a call from Dean that Tom is human and Mia explains how she works to give people closure and they pass it off as something such as hypnotism or meditation. Sam eventually spots the fact that "Driscoll" is a shapeshifter and is able to track his cell phone. Mia lends Sam her car to go after Buddy.

When Dean returns, Mia reveals what Sam has learned and done and is pulled aside by Jack as Dean goes to call Sam. Jack reveals to Mia that the Winchesters are not really his brothers and shows her his real mother's message to him. Jack asks Mia to take on Kelly's form so that he can see his mother once and she agrees. In the form of Kelly, Mia comforts Jack who expresses his fears to her that he really is a monster. "Kelly" assures Jack that its about the choices he makes and insists that "even monsters can do good in this world," stating that its something that she has to believe.

After returning to her usual form, Mia is thanked by Jack before Dean enters the room. To Mia's shock, Dean knocks Jack out with a fireplace poker and then reveals himself to actually be Buddy in disguise. After chaining Dean and Jack to the fireplace, Buddy is unrepentant in his murders or using Mia to her anger and states that after he found the life she built for herself, he had to take it all away which he found fun. Buddy demands that Mia kill Dean and Jack, threatening to use Dean's gun to kill her if she refuses. Mia refuses to commit murder and challenges Buddy to kill her.

Before Buddy can harm Mia, Sam returns. Buddy quickly knocks Dean out when he tries to warn Sam, holds his hand over Mia's mouth and mimicks Dean's voice to lure Sam into a trap. As Mia watches helplessly, Buddy attempts to kill Sam with Dean's gun, but Jack telekinetically deflects the bullet and blasts Buddy into a wall and away from Mia. Buddy is then quickly killed by Sam with a silver bullet when he rises again.

In the aftermath of Buddy's death, Mia decides to deal with his body herself, feeling that Buddy's actions were all her fault. Mia insists that all she wanted to do was help people but Jack assures her that she has helped him as she takes his words with a smile.
